About us
Established in 2005 as part of Sage Gateshead’s Adult Education programme, over the past nineteen years Northumbria Chamber Choir has built a reputation as a well known choir in the North East. As a consequence of the pandemic and changes at the Glasshouse, NCC is now an independent, not for profit, organisation while still maintaining an informal link with the Glasshouse.
We are a mixed-voice ensemble with approximately 40 members, singing an adventurous repertoire of mainly unaccompanied music dating from the sixteenth century to the present day. We sing music of many different styles – early and modern, sacred and secular, serious and light-hearted - written for four voices and upwards, and are equally at home with Bach, Tallis, Byrd and Palestrina as well as contemporary composers such as Eric Whitacre, Eriks Esenvalds, Bob Chilcott and Cecilia McDowell.
Our aim is to perform pieces which are challenging but enjoyable to sing; there is a balance of fun and hard work in our rehearsals.
The choir has gained a wider reputation around Britain and Europe through annual tours which are hugely successful and are much enjoyed, taking in such places as Edinburgh for the Festival Fringe, Bath, Bruges, Amsterdam and Paris.
